Last week my Practicum class took a field-trip to one of my favorite places in Kentucky; Keeneland. It was really nice to go back home, see people I went to high school with, and of course shoot photos at a beautiful horse racing track on a beautiful day.

A few weeks ago my practicum class was assigned to photograph people who work. I took this to mean, people who work with animals. Here's my favorite portrait.

Gina Mosley of Bowling Green, Ky, has over 20 animals and hopes to open a petting zoo before December. "To me the animals come first," said Mosley, a life-long animal lover.

Balloons, Toons and BBQ's

Balloons, Toons and BBQ's is an event that happens every year in Bowling Green. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Hot air balloon enthusiasts get together to showcase their balloons, particiate in a race and balloon glow. Bands play live music and several Bar-B-Q vendors sell their selection of meat sandwiches.

I was headed out to find a feature for my Practicum class when on the opposite side of the road I saw three people and three dogs sitting in the median. At first I wasn't too sure what to do, but I decided to turn around and go talk to them and see what their story was. It was really neat to hear their perspective and spend some time with people who lived so freely. I hope they make it to Louisville to see Hank Williams III.

Shana March, 24, Tasha Stone, 19 and Justin Thomas, 28 'fly a sign' by Scottsville Road in Bowling Green, Ky. The trio has been traveling together for 3 months, but all have been on the road for at least 5 years. "I started hitching when I was 14," Stone said, "I love the feeling of being on the road, life is so big you just gotta live it all." The three met at a music festival and decided to stick together. Since then Stone and Thomas have started dating and March has adopted a puppy. "It's important to travel with people you trust, and these people are my family - I trust them with my life," Thomas said.

For personal reasons I took an incomplete in my picture stories class. Now, I've enjoyed my summer and it's time for me to get back to work shooting stories. Meet Ashley and Jason. They've been dating since November and just moved in together in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Jason works as a graphic designer at a hospital. Ashley works for an online botique. When they're not working, they write a blog about their relationship. Here are some photos.

For my Picture Stories Class we were assigned to shoot a portrait series about anything we want! I decided to photograph some of the people who work at the kitchy businesses. I shot with my 5D through the viewfinder of a Rolleiflex and this is the result. The captions are the name of the person in the photograph and how long they have worked at the featured business.

Spring Break 2010

I spent my spring break in and around Letcher County, Kentucky. I participated in the Appalachian Cultural Project. I focused on documenting the daily life of Kelli and her beautiful and smart girls, Deladis and Ivy. It was a really neat experience to get to know Kelli and her girls, and to spend time deep in the mountains where all I could hear was the creek and all I could see was the big sky and mountains. I learned so much from her, and I can only hope she and her family enjoy the images I made. The following photos are my final story edit from the week. There are many other images I wish could have made it in but with the help from my coach, Brett Marshall I think we made a nice, tight edit.

Deladis Rose, 4 and Ivy Pearl, 1, sing along with their mother, Kelli during school. Kelli spends several hours a day teaching her children using the Waldorf Method of home schooling. This method emphasizes Imagination and good citizenship over Academics.

Kelli reads The Tale of Peter Rabbit to Ivy and Deladis. Kelli said she home schools because, “The county schools aren’t where they need to be right now.” She isn’t sure if she will ever send the girls to public school, “If the time comes and they need to go, I’ll consider it”, Kelli said.

Deladis watches a yoga video for pregnant mothers while Ivy sucks her fingers on the couch, while Kelli makes a snack in the kitchen. Kelli never gave the girls access to plastic pacifiers as babies, “They might learn to prefer the plastic over the nipple which would be a problem.” Kelli advocates breast feeding until the children decide it’s time to quit.

Deladis teases Lars the dog with a chicken nugget as Ivy climbs the stairs to the back porch.

The girls play in the creek that runs behind their house.

Since the family lives in such a secluded area Kelli trusts the girls to play around the property. Usually she stands and watches from the porch, or she keeps the door open as she cooks or cleans. On nice days the girls spend almost all day outside.

Kelli dresses Ivy before running into town to pick up mail and go to the library. Kelli goes to the library about once a week to get books about home schooling, natural birth and childrens books.

Deladis makes a face while getting her hair brushed. Kelli bathes the girls about once every three days to prevent their skin and hair from getting too dry.

The whole family prays before breakfast.

It snowed 5 inches the first weekend we were back at school. Here are some pictures from that adventure.

The image above was shot by someone, I don't have any clue who it was, but thanks (I'm the one in the orange hat right in the middle, so it wasn't me)! So here's the story - we were able to get a piece of plastic siding that slid down the hill really well. So, we decided to see how many people we could fit on it. We called it the layer test, it was SO FUN! We got a total of 13 people on the first time, and then I think we were able to get it up to 15 for the next few times.

Here are a few images I like from a story I've been working on. The mother, Paola has three children. Eli is 6, and Hunter and Aiden are 5. The twins have autism and are non-verbal. This story means a lot to me and I've already been really touched by these kids and the more I get to know them the more I want to understand what they are thinking. This isn't the final edit or anything, just some pictures I like. I would really appreciate feedback so I can try different things while I still have time to. I'll post the final story edit and some multimedia when I'm finished with the story.

This is basically what I've been up to since I've been back to school, well shooting for The Herald, Talisman, 12 hours of class and taking care of two pets. I'm trying to stay busy, it keeps me level headed. The first photo is of some grape tomatoes at the farmers market here in BG. It was an assignment for The Herald about eating local food. The second image is a portrait of Jordan Pitney, he makes scarves in his dorm room and sells them for extra money. The last few images are from the Puppy Paddle, it's an event that takes place the last day that the pool is open. People pay $10 and they get to swim with their dogs, and the money benefits the Humane Society, so it's for a good cause. I had a really fun time shooting this, it was a little intense at times. For instance, to get the diving board shots I was in the 12 feet deep water holding on to the side with one hand and shooting with the other, it was a blast (I didn't have any underwater housing)! Anyway, more to come about my new animal endeavor. Comments would be great.

The Woodford County Fair

Yee-Haw! So I went to the Woodford County Fair and ended up running into my elementary school crush, a guy I went to middle school with and a delinquent kid that lives down my street. I only rode one ride, and I took my camera with me (I bet you can tell by looking which frame I got while I was on it!) luckily, it survived and I didn't ride anymore rides. I'm posting the one of the band not because I think it's any good, but because I like that the drummer is playing under a big, glittery crown.

So I made a quick visit home yesterday to see my little sister Maggie's art gallery opening. I shot a few pictures but mostly hung out with my family. I woke up early to see her off to school and noticed this really cool pink salamander on the door, so I snapped a few photos of it. There is also a photo of my mom in here from dinner last night and then there is the view from my dorm room window. I hope you enjoy them. Comments are always welcome!

So I drove to Fairview, Ky to hopefully find a final story, which I did. Along the way I stopped by the Jefferson Davis memorial which is also there. It's this huge obelisk that just sticks out of the country side. All in all it was a good day and I found a sweet final which I will update Wednesday.

The first two are from a visit to Three Chimneys Farm. The last two need some explaining.. My family is from Bagdad/Shelbyville, Kentucky. The first photo of the footprint in the brick was taken in my grandparent's house in Shelbyville (about 30 minutes away from Louisville). So the brick was being made for a relatives house many years ago and one of the little boys who was around stuck his foot in the brick. Then my grandmother somehow had it and has kept it all these years. It's one of my favorite things in my grandparent's house!

The last photo is of a gravestone in the Bagdad Cemetery. So, my great great grandfather called Daddy Jim shot off his leg while trying to jump a fence. To help him get around he had a solid wood leg that attached with a leather cuff around his thigh. Then from there he wore a thick leather strap over his shoulder to keep it in place. Needless to say this fake leg was a pretty big part of his life. The point is that when he died the family thought it was important to commemorate his leg and had this concrete tree limb placed over where they buried the leg. Weird huh?

- This girl and guy were dancing at this thing called Swingin' on Main, they block off a block on main street in downtown Lexington, it was pretty cool.

I thought this was really cute.

This girl was really sweaty, her mom was wiping off her face. Her name is Hope and the brunettes name is Faith, they're sisters.

The band is Defiance, Ohio and they are definitely one of my favorite bands.
